Johnny Weir - Am American Gay Icon

I just got done watching the US National Figure Skating Championship’s exhibition night where, along with the other 2010 national champions, Johnny Weir dazzled the crowd with an original skating routine. While watching him I was once again reminded of, not only his brilliance in a pair of skates, but also his brilliance in shiny, tight, glittery spandex! Johnny Weir is the gay icon we need right now!

In America, gays are struggling to be recognized as equal human beings when it comes to civil rights. Many gay people are living in fear of what people would say if they come out as gay or, Heaven forbid, act gay! Johnny, on the other hand, does not give a damn about what people think. He goes out there encrusted in rhinestones and skates to Lady Gaga. He pops his hip when he stands and he shimmies as only a queen can. It is a breath of fresh air to see him so comfortable being himself on national TV.

And now, he will be representing the United States in the 2010 Olympics! I can’t think of a person I would rather see on TV right now, representing the US than Mr. Weir. He will show, not only the world, but also his home country, that it is fabulous to just be yourself, and that you can kick some ass while doing it!

Go Johnny Go! Bring us the gold!
